We Like It Like That! A Boogaloo Celebration
A FREE event @ Lincoln Center Out of Doors
Featuring Joe Bataan, Ray Lugo & the Boogaloo Destroyers
with special guest Richie Ray, the ABAKUÁ Afro-Latin Dance Company, and DJ Turmix
Frankie and ABAKUA have long been recognized for helping to preserve Boogaloo music, both in their artistic work and the Latin dance community. And to witness such a strong revival in this genre right now is not only an exciting time for its supporters, but a milestone in Latin music history.
As stated in Mathew Warren’s new documentary, Latin boogaloo is New York City—a colorful expression of ’60s Latino soul straight from the streets of El Barrio, the South Bronx, and Brooklyn. Boogaloo godfather Joe Bataan unites doo-wop charm and Latin sounds in his irresistible hits. In one of his first performances in forty years, Pete Rodriguez will join Bataan on the anthem he made famous, “I Like It Like That.” Ray Lugo’s good-time, hip-swinging originals pay homage to the style’s greats, including his special guest, legendary pianist and Salsa King Richie Ray. To heat up the dance floor, the ABAKUÁ Afro-Latin Dance Company will show off the scene’s retro-funky moves as in-demand Turmix spins the era’s Latin gems.
The ABAKUA Afro Latin Dance Company is proud to take part in such an incredible event, and at a venue as spectacular as Lincoln Center Out of Doors! Join us Thursday, August 6th as we celebrate the soulful sounds of Boogaloo and the musicians who helped put it on the map!
